What does that mean exactly?

What does that mean exactly? well technically if i'm sending files to the printer, that means the whole magazine is finished. the editorial process is done, the design is complete and has been edited, ALL corrections have been made, and all ads have been created, approved, placed in the pages of the magazine and double-checked by the sales reps. Basically, that the magazine is complete. But, someone sold a full page ad at the last minute (lotsa revenue), so I was actually doing the photo shoot for that ad the same night that I was sending files to the printer. Usually I don't even do the ads, the other artists do. But since it was a picky client, they asked me to do it. It was just weird. Working on an ad and sending the files at the same time.

Your job sounds like a lot of fun. I've always wanted to work for a magazine.
How did you end up getting the position?

it's a lot of fun but the deadlines are total hell. really. i get so stressed out i have a hard time sleeping at night during those few weeks. but it's all worth it when the magazine comes back smelling like paper chemicals, mmmm!!!
i applied for a position as a graphic designer, doing mainly just ads and some custom pub. Custom Publishing is work that most magazines do - like brochures, catalogues, stuff like that. help fill in the dead time in between magazines and generates more revenue.
anyway i got that position and then within a few months a new position opened up as Art Director for a startup magazine and I didn't even have to apply for - my boss called me in his office and told me it was all mine.
it was so exciting. i started with a blank page and turned it into a magazine. :yeah:

Wow, that's great! You must be really talented! What kind of mag is it? I'd love to see it. The magazine is targeted toward 20-30 year old Augustans without kids. Basically, people who are "on the scene" as far as doing things and knowing people. Allll of the content is local. For example, we have a featured couple and a featured bartender/waiter in every issue. When i get back to the office on Monday I will make jpgs of some of the pages and show them to you. I think it looks pretty good! i'm really excited right now because our next issue is our anniversary issue so i get to make some updates/changes to the design. woo hoo!

hahah that is a BIG deal. whenever that happens it's like really exciting (and dreadful at the same time) to be the person who gets to say it. but we don't yell it or anything. it really sucks. it means someone is about to lose a TON of money.
